The Dodge Brothers were no strangers to the automotive industry.
They had been building parts such as engines, transmissions and
axles for Ransom Olds' Oldsmobile and Henry Fords Model T series.
They were also stockholders in Ford Motor Company, but sold their
sizeable amount of stocks when it was apparent that Ford was
headed in a self sufficient direction in 1913.
In 1914 the Brothers built and sold their first car and eventually
sold over 45,000 that year. The car featured a strong inline four
cylinder engine, a welded all steel body (a first on a mass produced
American car), leather seats, a twelve volt electrical system, self
starter and demountable rims. By 1920 Dodge had moved into second
place in automotive sales in the US. Unfortunately, both brothers
died the same year as well. 1921 models were little changed with
the exception of a heater and wire wheels.
