W.O. Bentley realized his ambition to build the first true all-English
sports car with the first prototype Bentley "3-liter" in 1919. Sales
begun in 1921 and 141 were built the first year. The most distinguishing
specification of the engine was that the cylinders and head were cast as
one. Bentley had such good faith in his cars that a five-year warrantee
on the chassis was offered.
The four-valves per cylinder engine became renowned for its sturdiness
and the car proved to be a success in both the Tourist Trophy race and
24 Hours at Le Mans. Bentley's new car won Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928,
1929 (with the 3 Liter winning the '24 and '27, the 4.5 Liter in '28, and
the Speed Six winning in '29 and '30). This boosted sales at the factory
and provided the information for constant improvement. In addition to the
basic version TT models, speed models were also made available like the car
you see today.
The "Red Label" name signifies a short chassis. H.J. Mulliner provided the
coachwork for this particular car. Part of the body is covered in fabric.
