Reconstructed in 1992, this adobe building was originally built by the
Spainish in 1787 for the Santa Barbara Presidio commandant. It served
as the headquarters for Comandante Felipe de Goicoechea and the next
two commandants.
This portion of the presidio consisted of four rooms: the office or
oficina, the entrance or zaguán, the living
room or sala, and the bedroom or recamara which was
torn down when Santa Barbara Street was constructed. Following 1812,
the year that this comandancia was damaged by an earthquake,
it was converted into a storage room and the commandants moved their
quarters across Santa Barbara Street.
