The Tomcat's swept-wing idea came from the F-111. Able to carry a variety of air to air weapons, the Tomcat's weapons systems could track up to 24 targets over 100 miles away and attack six targets simultaneously with long-range Phoenix missles. Delivery began in 1972 and in 1987 the F-14D "Super Tomcat" was produced with better engines and improved avionics. The F-14s first use in combat was in 1981 when two F-14s shot down two Libyan SU-22 fighters who fired at them while on patrol. The F-14 later served in Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom. The F-14 was the Navy's standard carrier based fighter along with the F-18 Hornet. This aircraft is a prototype delivered to the Navy in 1972 as number 11 of 12 test aircraft. It participated in testing carrier use suitability on the USS Independence. It retired in 1982 with 1,264 flight hours.
