Los Angeles National Cemetery
|
At the entrance to the cemetery is the Bob Hope Veterans Chapel. In front of the chapel are markers inscribed with words adapted from the poem "Bivouac of the Dead" by Theodore O'Hara. | |
THE MUFFLED DRUM'S SAD ROLL HAS BEAT
THE SOLDIER'S LAST TATTOO. NO MORE ON LIFE'S PARADE SHALL MEET THAT BRAVE AND FALLEN FEW. |
||
ON FAME'S ETERNAL CAMPING-GROUND,
THEIR SILENT TENTS ARE SPREAD, AND GLORY GUARDS WITH SOLEMN ROUND THE BIVOUAC OF THE DEAD. |
||
NO RUMOR OF THE FOE'S ADVANCE
NOW SWEEPS UPON THE WIND, NO TROUBLED THOUGHT AT MIDNIGHT HAUNTS OF LOVED ONES LEFT BEHIND. |
||
NO VISION OF THE MORROW'S STRIFE
THE WARRIOR'S DREAM ALARMS. NO BRAYING HORN NOR SCREAMING FIFE AT DAWN SHALL CALL TO ARMS. |
||
THE NEIGHING TROOP, THE FLASHING BLADE,
THE BUGLE'S STIRRING BLAST, THE CHARGE, THE DREADFUL CANNONADE, THE DIN AND SHOUT ARE PAST. |
||
YOUR OWN PROUD LAND'S HEROIC SOIL
MUST BE YOUR FITTER GRAVE, SHE CLAIMS FROM WAR HIS RICHEST SPOIL THE ASHES OF THE BRAVE. |

BOB HOPE VETERANS CHAPEL
This historic Chapel is dedicated to honor
BOB HOPE
on his 99th Birthday - May 29th, 2002
in celebration of his lifelong service to our American Veterans. On behalf of all Veterans whose lives were touched by this legendary performer... The dedication of the Bob Hope Veterans Chapel was achieved through cooperation between the Federal Government and Veterans Park Conservancy, a nonprofit community organization. |
The Columbarium
The cemetery grounds contain an indoor columbarium, which is a vault with niches for urns containing the ashes of the dead. A plaque on the building indicates it was built by the Work Projects Administration (WPA) in 1940. It has a red brick exterior with Spanish style arches. Inside it is very ornate, making use of marble, tiles, and muted glass to let in the sunlight. There are also display cases containing military uniforms. Above the entrance to the columbarium there is a marble plaque that is incribed with the words, "WHERE VALOR PROUDLY SLEEPS." |
War Memorial
In the center of the cemetery is a brick and concrete memorial with a large platform for seating and a podium. On the front of the podium is a bronze plaque imprinted with Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. There are also plaques on the left and right corners of the structure. |
